Introduced in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to obtain john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Existing 3rd-level domains remained active.
